Moving to a new town can be a challenging experience, no matter how far you are going.
It is different for everyone, but each area in Guelph is suited to a different type of Guelphite:
1. As a student, most young people will try to find living accommodations close to the University of Guelph (near the Stone Road Mall), or with access to the public transportation system.
2. Young business professionals will want to be closer to downtown, or if they are commuting, closer to the South end.
3. Young families moving to Guelph will likely want to move to the South or East end of Guelph where the homes are newer and there are parks, schools and lots of friends to play with.
4. Looking to escape the cookie cutter homes? The North and West end are for you!
The South End of Guelph has been said to be one of the fastest growing communities in Southern Ontario. You will find homes, retail strip malls, great restaurants, a movie theatre and great gym (along with every major bank in one handy location) where just years ago there were farmers’ fields. Expansion is happening at a steady pace. In addition to servicing young families, those wishing to commute to Milton, Burlington, Oakville or Mississauga will find the proximity to the 401 very helpful.
The area surrounding the University of Guelph (on Gordon Street between Stone Road and College Avenue) contains ‘Old University’ which includes a mixture of older beautifully maintained homes, quaint condominium communities and, of course, some perpetual student rentals. In Guelph, you will find diversity and unique differences between streets, neighbourhoods and areas. It really does have its own personality!
Downtown Guelph is the perfect combination of small town/big city. The local neighbourhoods surrounding ‘downtown’ consist of students, young adults and young families. For those looking to live ‘right downtown’ this can mean renting above retail establishments/restaurants. Guelph at night can be lively and louder than some are used to and the Guelph Jazz Festival is held in the downtown core every summer and there are several award winning restaurants and local shops to choose from. There are also some beautiful older homes around the area, and young, urban-style families create a fantastic atmosphere in this area, including the areas around Exhibition Park, Sunny Acres Park and St Georges Park’s. These areas of Guelph are generally higher priced and move very quickly.
“The Ward” is another area in Guelph which includes the Italian Canadian Club and hosts the annual Guelph Italian Festival. One might see homes with large backyards and vegetable gardens. This area also includes student rentals and some great neighbourhoods for young families.
The East End of Guelph is an older part of town with a lot of fun character and quite a few bungalows! It includes mature streets and newer developments, rentals and great family-friendly neighbourhoods. The East end is quickly growing and is the perfect place to start as a First Time Home Buyer with children 🙂 The general perception by Realtors® in Guelph is that every area is unique and can differ from street to street. There are also areas in the West and North parts of town that include family housing, rentals and great family friendly neighbourhoods.
FUN FACT: Eramosa Road runs from the East end of Guelph all the way into Downtown – and you can see the Church of Our Lady from the beginning of your walk or drive from Victoria Road North!
The West End of Guelph is great for those commuting to Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge and also for those wanting to be close to the COSTCO!
The North End of Guelph is wonderful for the older and more mature neighbourhoods. You will find yourself closer to Fergus and Elora as well! You will ALSO find yourself closer to Lakeside Church on Conservation Road – come say hello one Sunday!
